Dr. Alex Hawkins

A Richmond native who graduated from Richmond Christian School, Dr. Alex Hawkins earned his bachelor’s degree with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999, and his DDS degree from the VCU School of Dentistry in 2004.

After associating for five years in two different offices, he purchased the practice now named after him in early 2009–a choice he considers among the best he’s ever made. Dr. Hawkins loves helping those in deepest need, having volunteered for dental missions in both Honduras and Peru. When not ridding the world of tooth decay, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Amy, and their two children. He also thrives on rousing games of ping-pong, singing at his church, playing Frisbee with the family German Shepherd named Cinnamon, and–as the Official Dentist of VCU Athletics–rooting for the VCU men’s basketball team at every opportunity!

Laurie Tate

Practice Administrator

Laurie is the zest of Hawkins Family Dentistry. With over 20 years of customer service experience, she joyfully assists you in receiving the dental care you want and need. Laurie will work tirelessly to maximize your insurance benefits and stands as your patient care advocate. Her positive energy is contagious!

Laurie loves shopping, movies with friends, and her Chihuahuas, Lola and Toby.

Kayla Meeks

Dental Assistant

Kayla has rapidly become Dr. Hawkins’ pre-eminent assistant, although she is the newest member of our team. Her career in dentistry began in 2005, and her ambition is two-fold: to serve our patient family to the best of her proficient ability, and to facilitate growth by introducing the public to the benefits of HFD.

Kayla is a rabid Hokies fan, even going as far as to name her dog Hokie (who is not rabid).

Valerie Peeples

Dental Assistant

Valerie is Dr. Hawkins’ left-hand woman, having been repositioned to chairside assistant to more efficiently handle our rapid practice growth.  She’s found her routine quickly, with an enthusiastic demeanor that’s anything but routine.

Valerie is also an avid basketball fan, having played hoops at the collegiate level.

Elizabeth Toney

Dental Hygienist

Elizabeth is the oral health educator extraordinaire at Hawkins Family Dentistry. Graduating with honors in Dental Hygiene from VCU’s School of Dentistry, she believes that her mission is to help everyone achieve a state of optimum oral health in order to prevent and treat disease. We love her “can-do” attitude!

In addition to spending time on the water with her husband, Justin, Elizabeth likes attending Swift Creek Baptist Church and playing with her new puppy, Jackson.

Laura Collins

Dental Hygienist

Laura is our newest hygiene asset, having been welcomed with unanimous praise by patients and team alike.  Also a graduate of the VCU School of Dentistry’s hygiene department, she shines your smile with the same passion she has for community outreach, through both Mission of Mercy and the Mechanicsville Christian Dental Clinic.

If you meet Laura on a soccer field or a pair of water skis, she’ll educate you on more than just your teeth!

Sue Hunter

Patient Coordinator

Sue’s is the first smiling face you will see at Hawkins Family Dentistry. She enjoys greeting familiar patients and new ones, and works hard to ensure you are satisfied with your visit before leaving our office. Sue first joined the practice as a patient in 1988, and she became a team member in 2007. She has worked in customer service for the last twenty years and looks forward to serving you through her experience.

Sue is married with two children. She enjoys reading and traveling – particularly to visit with family!
